Gate not opening? Start here
If your estate gate will not open, the cause is usually one of four things: a dead remote or keypad battery, a tripped breaker or lost power, a physical obstruction in the path of travel, or a safety sensor that has been knocked out of alignment.
Work through the checklist below in order. It is safe, takes a few minutes, and resolves a meaningful share of calls. If none of it helps, stop — a heavy automatic gate is not something to force.

Four safe checks, in order
Do these before calling anyone. Stop immediately if the gate is under tension, hanging, or off its track.

Check the remote and keypad
Try a second remote. If both are unresponsive, replace the battery in one and test again. If the keypad has no backlight or tone, treat it as a power or wiring issue rather than a credential issue.

Check power and the breaker
Find the breaker or disconnect serving the gate and confirm it has not tripped. Reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop and call us — a repeating trip indicates a fault, not a nuisance.

Look for an obstruction
Clear the full path of travel: gravel, debris, packages, irrigation heads, and overgrown planting. On slide gates, check the track and the roller path along its whole length.

Check the safety sensors
Look for the photo eyes on each side of the opening. Wipe the lenses, clear anything in the beam, and check that neither has been knocked out of alignment by a vehicle or landscaping.
When to Call Us
Stop and call a licensed contractor if
Automatic gates carry significant weight and stored energy. These conditions are not homeowner-serviceable.
The breaker keeps tripping
A repeating trip means a genuine electrical fault. Continuing to reset it risks damage to the operator and to the property.
The gate is stuck open
Your perimeter is currently absent. This is a security matter and we schedule it accordingly.
The gate is off its track or sagging
Do not attempt to reseat or lift it. Misaligned gates fail suddenly and carry more load than they appear to.
You hear the motor but nothing moves
The operator is running while the mechanics are not responding, which usually means a failed drive component or a broken linkage.
Credentials stopped working all at once
A receiver that lost programming after a power event, or a failed control board. Both need diagnosis rather than reprogramming guesswork.
It works intermittently
Intermittent faults are almost always damaged cabling or water ingress, and they get worse. Have it traced properly.

Why does my gate open but not close?
Almost always a safety device. Photo eyes and edge sensors are designed to prevent closing when the beam is broken or misaligned, so a dirty lens or a nudged bracket will hold the gate open. It still needs correcting, because an open gate is not a perimeter.
Can I open the gate manually?
Most operators have a manual release, but its location and procedure differ by unit and a gate under tension can move unexpectedly. If you have not been shown the release for your specific operator, do not improvise.
My gate stopped working after a power outage. Is that normal?
It is common. Backup batteries deplete, receivers can lose programming, and control boards are vulnerable to surges. Reset the breaker once; if that does not resolve it, the fault needs diagnosis.
How much will a repair cost?
It depends on the cause. Our cost page sets out ranges by repair and upgrade type so you have a realistic expectation before anyone visits.
Do I need a new gate or just a repair?
If the operator is correctly sized, currently supported, and the fault is isolated, repair is normally right. Repeat failures usually mean the operator was undersized for the gate from the beginning.
