Looking secure vs. being secure
Looking secure means a property signals protection to a casual observer; being secure means it measurably resists someone who has decided to get in. The two are routinely confused, and the difference is usually discovered too late.
This page is a reference. It sets out how to evaluate your own property honestly, layer by layer, using the same criteria we apply during an authorized assessment.
The Distinction
Appearance is judged by a visitor. Resistance is judged by an adversary.
A system optimised for appearance is designed to be seen. A system optimised for resistance is designed to be defeated, tested against that assumption, and corrected.
Appearance is static
Height, finish, and visible equipment do not change under pressure. They communicate intent, which deters the opportunist and nobody else.
Resistance is measured in time
The only meaningful question is how long each layer delays entry, and whether that delay produces a consequence for the intruder.
Deterrence is a calculation, not a symbol
An intruder weighs effort, exposure, and likelihood of identification. Real deterrence changes that arithmetic; decoration does not.
Untested is unknown
Any perimeter that has never been probed under authorization is an assumption. Assessment converts assumption into fact.
Layer by Layer
What to check on your own property
Walk the perimeter with these questions. Where you cannot answer confidently, you have found something worth testing.
Barrier
How long would this hold?
Look for footholds, low returns, cuttable sections, and places where landscaping or grade reduces effective height. Ask how long a person with common tools would need, not whether the fence looks tall.
Access
Who can open it, and can you take that away?
Count everyone who currently has a code, remote, or key. If you cannot list them, or cannot revoke one person without disrupting everybody, access is not controlled.
Surveillance
Would this footage identify anyone?
Review night recordings at the actual approach distance. If a face or plate is not legible, the coverage documents an event without answering the only question that matters.
Network
Could the system itself be the entry?
Ask whether default credentials were changed, whether cameras share a network with household devices, and whether any ports were opened to make an app convenient.
Response
What actually happens next?
Detection without a defined consequence is only a record. Decide in advance who is contacted, what they do, and how quickly.
In Short
A system that merely looks secure can still leave you exposed. Deterrence is the objective; recording is the corroboration.
